Our History
The Hasting & Smith® story begins in 1968, when childhood friends Harold Hasting and Walter Smith opened a small clothing shop in their hometown. As avid outdoorsmen, Harold and Walter were frustrated by the lack of durable, comfortable clothing available at the time. They decided to take matters into their own hands, using Harold’s knitting skills and Walter’s sewing talents to create practical, well-made sweaters suited for long days in the woods and on the trails.
Word of their comfortable, rugged sweaters quickly spread throughout the community. Hunters, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts from all around flocked to their little shop, drawn to the hard-wearing fabrics and thoughtful details that made their clothes stand out. Within a few short years, the shop had outgrown its modest beginnings. In 1975, Harold and Walter expanded into a larger facility, increasing production while maintaining their commitment to quality.
As the decades passed, Hasting & Smith® continued to grow and evolve with the times. In the 1980s, they broadened their catalog to include more everyday clothes and pants, crafted with the same devotion to comfort and durability. In the 2000s, they launched an e-commerce website to make their products available to customers around the world. But throughout the changes and challenges of five decades in business, they’ve remained grounded in the same values of quality, craftsmanship, and customer satisfaction that Harold and Walter built the company on back in 1968.
Today, Hasting & Smith® carries on their legacy as a family-owned business spanning three generations. We take pride in being one of the last remaining clothing companies that still manufactures our products in our American factories.
